Walesi Limited has announced that it has now expanded its Digital Terrestrial TV coverage footprint to the greater Savusavu area. This is after the company commissioned its new transmission site at Naveria which is within the fringes of the Savusavu town.
Walesi was launched in December 2017 by the Minister for Communications, Honourable Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum with an aim of providing Digital TV coverage to all communities in Fiji. Since then Walesi has gradually expanded its footprint. The expansion to the greater Savusavu area is an iconic achievement by Walesi since Savusavu has been a greenfield area in terms of television coverage. Until now the greater Savusavu area had very minimal television coverage.
The commissioning of this new transmission site in Savusavu has also expanded Digital TV coverage to Koro island. Koro island was worst hit by cyclone Winston in 2016 and this new development should come as great news to the residents of the island.
As a result of this expansion residents of Savusavu and its surrounding areas are now able to enjoy eight local TV channels for free. These include FBC TV, Fiji One, FBC Sports, Mai TV, Channel 2, FBC 2, Parliament Channel and Hope Channel.
While making the announcement, the acting CEO of Walesi, Mr. Shivnesh Prasad said, “this is a great initiative supported by the Fijian Government towards enhancing access to technologies and reducing the digital divide amongst Fijian communities”.
Walesi set-top boxes are available at Walesi offices and authorized retail outlets including Courts, Tappoo, Universal Electronics and Vinod Patel. While the Set-top boxes are retailed for $99, households with less than $30,000 annual income are eligible to acquire these set-top boxes at no cost. Viewers would also need an UHF antenna in order to receive Walesi Digital TV signal.
The Walesi team would be conducting roadshows in Savusavu from Wednesday 15th to Saturday 18th May 2019 to distribute Walesi set-top boxes and to provide technical support to get homes connected to the Walesi platform.
